OOO doesn’t necessarily mean not available.
Last month I managed to get away from my desk, for a little break in Greece, and it was my choice to work. But it’s not for everyone.
As a self-employed small business owner, I am all too aware of the struggles small (and larger) business have had in recent years. So, when we have active clients and projects to work on, we don’t turn those opportunities down.
The benefits of tech always in our hands means that we can always be contactable.
Is this a good or bad thing? Depends on your situation and status.
I know many full-time employees of corporations that end up working whilst on their family holiday and regretting doing that, on their time away. I remember a great campaign by one of our clients and the great team at British Airways Holidays, a couple of years ago, highlighting the benefits of holidays and and prioritising family time. Example here and their press and outdoor ads displayed some hilarious and cheeky Out Of Office response messages.

Everyone deserves and needs a rest, physically and for our mental health.
For me, as a small business owner, I am grateful that I can work whilst on holiday, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to leave my desk for fear of letting things slip. (Yes, I have a team to support, but I still like to ensure I am available for them and my clients).
I still had some time off, rested, read a book and the change of scene and travelling was wonderful. My work life balance is my choice.
The biggest bonus was, without my little trip I wouldn’t have had the most unexpected PR coverage. All from a couple of photos I took one day, and then a comment I made on Hello! Magazines Instagram post about the Steve Jobs yacht that I spotted. They contacted me for more info around ‘the story’, to be honest there wasn’t much to say, but they wrote and published an article around it and named my business and me too! Fame at last ;-)
Without my little trip Talent Hub wouldn’t have had a mention on such a huge website. And if you get the chance, go to Santorini, it’s a stunning island full of history,, culture and the off celebrity sailing around.
